語源
「Agkistrodon」は分類学で用いられる現代ラテン語に由来し、最終的には古代ギリシャ語の「agkistron」と「odous」に由来します。『agkistron』は「釣り針」や「かぎ」を、『odous』（語幹odont-）は「歯」を意味しました。
『agkistron』と『odous』が19世紀の分類学的ラテン語で結合されて属名「Agkistrodon」が作られ、このグループのピットバイパーの学名として定着しました。
元々は「かぎ状の歯」を文字どおり表していましたが、やがて特定のピットバイパー属の正式な属名として固定化されました。
