unindexed
|un-in-dexed|
/ʌnˈɪn.deks/
(unindex)
not listed in an index / removed from an index
Etymology
'unindexed' is formed from the negative prefix 'un-' plus 'index'. 'Un-' is an English productive prefix meaning 'not' or 'reverse of', and 'index' comes from Latin 'index' meaning 'pointer, sign'.
'index' originates from Latin 'index' (from the verb 'indicare' meaning 'to point out'). It passed into Old French/Medieval Latin and then into Middle English as 'index' or 'indice'. The productive English prefix 'un-' (from Old English 'un-') was later attached to form 'unindex' and its past participle 'unindexed'.
Originally 'index' meant a 'pointer' or 'indicator' and then came to mean a list or catalogue; 'un-' simply negates or reverses that, so 'unindexed' now means 'not included in a list/index' or 'removed from an index'.
