non-astronomical
|non-as-tro-nom-i-cal|
/nɒn-əˌstrɒnəˈmɪkəl/
not related to astronomy
Etymology
'non-astronomical' originates from the prefix 'non-' meaning 'not' and 'astronomical' from Greek 'astronomikos', where 'astron' meant 'star' and 'nomos' meant 'law'.
'astronomikos' transformed into the Latin 'astronomicus', and eventually became the modern English word 'astronomical'. The prefix 'non-' was added to form 'non-astronomical'.
Initially, 'astronomical' meant 'pertaining to the stars', but over time it evolved to also mean 'extremely large'. 'Non-astronomical' retains the original meaning of 'not related to stars'.
