Etymology
'ecosystem-focused' is a compound formed from 'ecosystem' and the adjective 'focused'. 'ecosystem' was coined in English (1935) from Greek elements 'oikos' meaning 'house' and 'systema' meaning 'system'. 'focused' derives from Latin 'focus' meaning 'hearth' or 'center', later used in English to mean 'central point of attention'.
'ecosystem' was introduced into ecological science by A. G. Tansley in 1935 to describe an interacting biological community and its physical environment; 'focus' entered English from Latin via scholarly and scientific usage in the 17th century and produced the adjective 'focused'. Combining them into 'ecosystem-focused' is a modern English development, increasingly used in ecology, business, and technology from the late 20th to early 21st century.
Initially, 'ecosystem' referred specifically to ecological units in natural science; over time it broadened to describe networks of interacting entities in business and technology. Accordingly, 'ecosystem-focused' has expanded from mostly ecological applications to also describe strategies and perspectives that emphasize networks and interdependence across organizations and products.
