de-tinting
|de-tint-ing|
/diːˈtɪnt/
(de-tint)
remove a tint
Etymology
'de-tinting' is formed in English from the prefix 'de-' (meaning 'remove' or 'reverse') + the noun 'tint' (a small amount of coloration).
'tint' comes from Old French 'teint'/'tinte', ultimately from Latin 'tingere' meaning 'to dye'; the prefix 'de-' is from Latin 'de-' meaning 'away' or 'off'. Together they produced the modern compound 'de-tint' and the gerund/nominalized form 'de-tinting'.
Originally 'tint' referred to dyeing or coloring; over time it came to mean a slight coloration or film. The compound 'de-tinting' therefore came to mean the removal of that slight coloration or film.
