Etymology
'artwork' originates from English, specifically the compound 'art' + 'work', where 'art' ultimately comes from Latin 'ars' meaning 'skill' and 'work' comes from Old English 'weorc' meaning 'something done'.
'art' passed into English via Old French 'art' (from Latin 'ars'), and 'work' comes from Old English 'weorc'; these elements combined in Modern English (by the 18th–19th century usage) to form the compound 'artwork' meaning a product of artistic skill.
Initially it meant 'a work showing skill' (general sense of work produced by skill), but over time it evolved to the more specific modern meanings of 'a piece of visual art' and also 'illustrations/visual designs for media'.
