Mumbai
|mum-baɪ|
/mʌmˈbaɪ/
Indian port city
Etymology
'Mumbai' originates from Marathi, specifically the name 'Mumbā' (the local goddess Mumbadevi) combined with 'ā'/'aai' meaning 'mother'.
'Mumbai' changed from the Portuguese/English forms 'Bombaim'/'Bombay' and eventually became the modern official name 'Mumbai' after the city's name change in 1995.
Initially the place was widely known in European sources as 'Bombay' (a Portuguese/Anglicized form), but over time the Marathi-derived 'Mumbai' became the official and commonly used name.
